Square Enix is on a roll as of late and that is not understatement. They had a great helping of games that will be coming out and this little gem of a game called Tomb Raider lead the pack. Lara Croft and Tomb Raider are synonymous, but this isn’t the game that we all grew up with on the PlayStation. This is a new take on an established series.
The first thing I want to give you is the back story of this game. The game takes place in Lara’s early years. She is 21 years old and is fresh out on one of her first journeys as an explorer. The game looks beautiful and splendid. It’s great the direction that they have taken on the series and it makes it look like a great adventure. In the presentation that we were shown we see Lara’s survival instinct. She is bloodied and battered hanging from a rope upside down and that is just the beginning.
I have to say that in my opinion that this game can give Uncharted a run for its money. There is huge emphasis on fire. You can light torches to lead the way in dark environments. You may want to be careful because you never know when a QuickTime event may happen that requires you to fight for your life from an enemy. We were shown what happens when you fail an event and it wasn’t pretty. The enemy takes out a pick axe and stabs you right in the sternum, killing you instantly.
The environments look vivid and magnificent. When we were shown the outside Island. I have to tell you, my excitement skyrocketed from giddy to WTF OMG! We were introduced to a new character called Conrad Roth. He is also a survivor of the island. You can expect this man to represent Lara’s father figure. He will help her get through the ordeal that she is going through and hopefully this will allow her to better improve herself as the game progresses, into the adventurer that we all know and love.
The presentation in the game is very well done and I have to say that the presentation is probably my favorite aspect of the game. The voice acting in the game is great, Lara sounds and feels very authentic. The weather, lighting, and mood are great and it leads into that very creepy feel of the island that the developers are trying to portray. The game actually feels scary. There is a cut scene in which Conrad is attacked by a group of wolves and as they bite into his leg and rip the flesh off you can actually see the skin peeling off his leg. It will make you cringe and turn away, it’s that gruesome. The cinematic of the game are very in your face and it will make you jump.
Although, we were shown more of the emotional aspect of Lara in the presentation we were also given a few glimpses into the gameplay aspect of the game. Lara will have something called a survival skill which will allow her to seek out other objects that will help her progress on her journey as a way to survive. There will be different guns that you can get in the game such as a shotgun, crossbow, and a climbing axe that will allow you to traverse new heights. There will also be a fast travel system set up so that you can get to and from different parts of the island. There is also the option to salvage items from different types of wreckage that you may find around the Island.
Finally, Tomb Raider was one of the games that after E3 you have to put it on your radar. It was a surprise at how far the series has come. I know the first game has yet to come out, but I already see how this could become a great new trilogy. Watch out Uncharted, Tomb Raider is coming for that number one spot. I’ll be looking forward to Tomb Raider as it will be dropping next year. This game is going to be a great adventure epic. What do you guys and girls think about the new Tomb Raider, will this dethrone Uncharted?
