True Gamer of the Week: Glen Schofield

True Gamer

GamerFitNation presents Glen Schofield as True Gamer of the Week

Glen lets us into his world. I am CEO and Co-founder of Sledgehammer Games, currently in production of Modern Warefare 3. I have been making video games for over 20 years now. I created and directed Dead Space which won over 80 awards worldwide including DICE’s Best Action Adventure Game and two B.A.F.T.A.’s. I work with some of the brightest, most talented and creative people in the world. Working as a gamemaker is truly a dream come true and I love what I do. I’ve made around fifty or so games in my career; I started as an artist. I have a BFA from Pratt Institute in Fine Art and an MBA (business) from Golden Gate University. I’m married, have a wonderful wife and three great kids. All of us game but also exercise. In my spare time I also paint, check out my website. We’re extremely proud of our site and try and keep new content flowing on a weekly basis. Check back often and sign up. We’ve also started a “Hammer of the Month” contest with fantastic prizes and also a question of the week. And of course the very latest info about MW3.

I have owned every gaming system, I have to of course. It’s hard to say which game sparked my interest in gaming. I go way back to Asteroids, moon patrol, etc. A couple early games that influenced me were Treasure’s “Gun Star Heroes”, Insomniac’s “Disruptor” and the “Contra” series. I love shooters and third person action adventure games best and the occassional RPG. There have also been some absolutely fantastic games over the past few years including Resident Evil, Gears of War and of course Modern Warfare.

What Keeps You Gaming? My job, my kids, the creativity of the industry and just the pure enjoyment I get out of waiting for a game to come out and finally playing it. Nothing like it. This fall is going to be a blast.

Workout/Diet

I work out at least 7 times a week, mostly weights but doing high reps of lighter weights. My days of benching 350 are over. When I’m not crunching on a game I workout 10-12 times a week, which obviously equates to 2 adays. That means cardio in the morning and weights at lunch.
Food, I’m not a great dieter but I keep everything in moderation. When I’m really training well I will also eat much healthier. But even now I watch what I eat.

Advice to gamers who are struggling with weight issues: don’t eat when you play games. If you’re going to, find something healthy. Do try and find a sport or exercise you like. Do pushups while a level is loading. Take stairs, not escalators (I do that all the time). And find a buddy to work out with. It’s so much better with a friend.

Health wise what are you goals: After the game is over, lose 10-15 pounds and get back to 2 aday workouts. I feel great when I’m that fit.

Opinion on Health and Gaming: Should go hand in hand. Kids don’t get enough exercise. If you like shooter games, try paintball once in a while- that’s one heck of a workout. Really, find something healthy you like to do and go out and do it. I started when I was 14 or 15 and it became a lifelong habit. It truly is one of the best things that I did for myself. My dad had a heart attack at a young age (36) and back then exercise was really the only treatment back to full health. I started going with him. He’s still alive today and we attribute it to exercise. Its has helped me in so many ways that I can’t list them all. (But never stop gaming:)

Motion Technology: Love it. You can really get some exercise doing some of these games. At least most get you up and moving.

Opinion of GamerFitNation: Fantastic! I work with so many gamemakers who go to the gym. Sledgehammer also provides free gym access to every employee. Our staff is healthier and happier for it. We play softball, basketball, some go climbing and many bike to work. We are extremely health conscious and completely agree with everything in moderation and balance. We salute GamerFitNation’s stance of staying fit, moderation and serious game playing.

GamerFitNation would like to thank Glen for letting us into his world. Welcome to the Club.
