True Gamer of the Week: Chris Erickson AKA Avid X

Avid X tells us a little about himself. I’m a 27 year old guy living in Michigan. I currently am a full time butcher and YouTube content partner. I formerly operated a couple of Xbox centric websites as well as a podcast. I’m a three time Microsoft awarded MVP for Xbox from ‘07-’10. I have dreams of being voice actor. For the most part though I’m a gamer geek !
My current project is a YouTube channel by the name of Get Fit Gamer ( ) . At the end of 2009 I was tired of struggling with my weight loss and I needed something to keep me accountable. I  originally formed the channel to document my life, share information and meet other people on a similar path. Since starting the channel many people have contacted me telling me that I have inspired them to lose weight, in turn this keeps me motivated.
This YouTube channel has really become a great platform for me to express my creativity. You never know what to expect on Get Fit Gamer. I may upload a weight loss vlog one day and a beat boxing or comedy video the next. At the end of the day I want to bring new like-minded individuals into the world of personal health.

Gaming systems Owned: I’ve owned most systems through my life but currently I’m holding onto a Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Atari 2600, Xbox and Xbox 360 w/ Kinect.  Mario Bros on NES is the game sparked my interest in gaming.
What keeps you gaming: The next big thing. I’ve always called myself a “next-gen” gamer in the sense that I’m always waiting for the next version of hardware and software. I’m looking forward to the day of true virtual reality.

Workout regimen and eating habits: I enjoy walking, running, biking, yoga, and swimming.  I try to break a good hard sweat a minimum two times a week. Soon I plan on stepping up my strength training.
I have never been an athlete or much into sports so conditioning myself to enjoy working out has taken time. I originally thought I could reach my goal weight by just dieting.
Eventually I hit a plateau. I lost at least 50 lbs cutting back on soda, fast food, fatty meats, refined grains and dairy. Currently I try to eat a lot of high fiber foods, specifically fruits and vegetables. I still indulge sometimes but I remind myself to stay balanced.

Advice to gamers who are struggling with weight issues: First you must look at your situation from a third person perspective and observe your actions. Try to understand the root causes for why you are overweight. Understand at the core of this is a problem with your mind. We wear our depression.
To understand yourself to the fullest and to understand the reality of the situation it helps to arm yourself with lots of health, nutrition and weight loss information.
If you have a negative mindset you need to turn that around, one of the first things that ever awoke me to the fact that I was being a depressed and negative person was the movie ‘The Secret’, if you ever do anything please watch that movie. It is important to move through life with a positive attitude, this will allow the change you want to make within yourself that much easier. I also highly recommend the book “Eat to Live” by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, it was the first weight loss information book I have read and with everything I know now I believe it contains great information.. I also recommend searching YouTube. I have watched hundreds of videos on many different health and fitness topics. Make it your hobby. With knowledge comes power. With power you can overcome obstacles. Health is wealth !

Health wise what are you goals: I simply want to be the happiest and best version of myself possible. I have a goal weight of 180 lbs I’d like to see. But because I’m not there right now I’m not going to cry about it. I’m on the right path.

Opinion on Health and Gaming: I believe health and gaming should go hand and hand. Most games have some sort of competitive aspect about them. I have personally seen cognitive improvements when playing games now that I am a much healthier person.
Who would have thought I’d be a better shot just because I cut back on the junk food that had fueled thousands of gaming hours previously. I have even talked to pro gamers who try to live a healthy lifestyle to maintain their edge.

Opinion on the current motion technology: Currently the only motion games I play are on Xbox Kinect. I previously owned a Wii and PS3 and enjoyed the fitness game series EA Sports Active.Those games did a good job teaching me a variety of exercises I could do in my home. I believe Xbox Kinect is a great piece of technology, it’s amazing to see my disabled mother and brother jumping around having a blast. not to mention you are just about guaranteed to break a sweat. As long as consumers don’t turn their backs on motion game technology the future is bright for the upcoming generations of game addicts.
