Video games are fun, but to have your kids learning things while playing a video game is a win-win for parents.

After looking around Toys-R-Us with one of my friends, I thought about video games that educational. She just bought her little one a DS, and one game that caught my eye was Brain Age. I’m a huge Sudoku fan, so I had fun playing that. I gave her little girl a challenge, but one that was attainable. That matters. So here are five games that are educational for your kids for DS or Wii.

Brain Age 2 – New Activities! The title is a series of mini games designed to give your brain a workout. The 17 new, engaging activities are all designed to help work your
brain and increase blood flow to the prefrontal cortex. Whether you’re playing simple songs on a piano keyboard or monitoring the photo finish of a footrace, you’ll love your new mental workout!

Big Brain Academy – Big Brain Academy is a modern-day stress reliever that improves your thinking skills. These 15 activities test your brain powers and improve your thinking abilities in areas like logic, memory, math and analysis. Free your mind by working through a number of simple but deep problems. There are five different types of challenges, appropriate for all ages and challenging for all skill levels.

My Word Coach – My Word Coach, developed in collaboration with linguists, helps players improve their verbal communication and vocabulary in a fun way. Practice with six different exercises to choose between. Players can input missing letters from words, spell out the answers to various definitions, choose which word matches a particular definition, form specific words with Scrabble-like tiles, and more

Disney Think Fast – Disney TH!NK Fast is a new Disney-themed game show style quiz game for those ready for some quick thinking, hosted by the always lovable and charismatic Genie from Disney’s “Aladdin.” Friends and family can choose from an array of classic Disney characters, including Mickey, Minnie and Donald Duck as contestants to compete against each other in more than 15 rounds to see who’s the smartest and has the fastest fingers. Rounds range from multiple choice questions to mini-games, where players will compete against each other to score the highest amount of points in themed locations based on “The Lion King,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Lilo & Stitch” and “101 Dalmatians.” Disney TH!NK Fast is destined to be the definitive party game to bring families and friends together this holiday season.

Smarty Pants – Smarty Pants boasts multiple game modes including a family mode, a single team race against time and a rapid-fire competitive mode perfect for groups of friends. With both competitive and collaborative game modes and 20,000 questions in multiple categories, the fun is virtually endless!

I want to play Smarty Pants with my kids now after looking at videos of the game. Check out these games for your kids. It may just be a great gift for them for Christmas.  Getting smarter while having fun.
