Unplug yourself from your game console and learn how to salsa! No, I am not talking about the condiment. I am talking about the dance!
4 months ago I started taking classes at a studio in Spanish Harlem known as Santo Rico (SantoRico.com). I’ve taken many dance classes around New York City but never exactly dedicated myself to completing a program. So far in the last few months I have managed to reap many of the benefits associated with dancing and I think everyone else could too!
So you’re single and you’re looking for a change of scenery? You’re not going to meet a new love interest or friends by staying home and sulking. Salsa class is a great way to introduce new people into your life. Most dance schools encourage social dancing by hosting dance events called “Socials”. You will meet people at these socials who share the same enthusiasm for learning as you do and will provide encouragement for you to grow as a dancer. For those already involved in a relationship there are rewards as well.
Let’s say you’re into gaming and your significant other not so much. Taking a salsa class together can help you bond with your partner in a romantic way. You could discover some hidden talents you never thought you or your partner had. Salsa is a very sensual and sexy dance that could keep the fire burning in your relationship. Not only can salsa dance help you connect with your love but it can also improve your health in a number of ways.
Salsa can enhance your balance especially if you’re someone like me who has a hard time staying aligned and coordinated. With salsa dance you are constantly dancing on the balls of your feet so you have no choice but to do your best to stay balanced. Salsa can also help burn those unwanted calories thus aiding in weight loss so if you’re looking to trim your figure, why not try an activity that can be fun?
You might find yourself intimidated at first but your confidence will elevate each time you learn a new step. You don’t need to be Patrick Swayze to try out a class nor do you have to be of Latin descent either. Salsa dancing is for people of all backgrounds and all ages. There is nothing to lose by checking out a class and who knows, you might unearth a new passion. Follow through, dedicate yourself, practice and most importantly of all just have fun with it!
