Good for the Heart

Ever since I can remember, we always had an event at my elementary and middle school that was dedicated to our heart. In elementary school, we did Jump Rope for Heart, while in middle school, we did Hoops for Heart. These two events were sponsored by the American Heart Association.

Yesterday, one of our local schools took part in Hoops for Heart and had another successful year. Hoops for Heart is a fundraising activity that helps promote physical activity while enjoying and enhancing basketball skills. While in middle school, I always wanted to win the three point shootout, but I never did. Each year I was a little bit better, but I never seem to make the most shots. At this school, they have free throw shoot outs and three pointer shoot outs. Competitions tend to make everything fun.

Teaching children at a young age about the importance of there heart is important.  Did you know that heart disease and stokes are our nation’s number one and number three killer? That is a scary static. While in elementary school, the importance of taking care of your heart came to life right before my eyes. I will never forget this day. One of my friends lost her father to heart disease. He was so young when he died that it scared all of us. We didn’t understand death at that age, but we just knew that she wasn’t going to be able to see her dad anymore.

This disease can be prevented. According to MayoClinic, here are some ways to prevent heart disease:

  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco
  • Exercise for 30 minutes on most days of the week
  • East a heart-healthy diet
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Get regular health screenings

So remember keep your kids active and get to moving with them. You get to spend time with them, and they will see that it is important to them to stay active. Have a great week gamers.
