*Warning this article contents Spoilers from the GOD War Series*
So, where does this Ascension take us as far as story? I ask this because I feel that I’m not the only one who was initially confused by what the new trailer presented. At first glance you think “o.k looks like Kratos is in tartarus now since his death in GOW3″, but then you here Gaia the sprint of the earth/titan say “Before he was a God he was a man.” This kind of suggested that the story will possibility be a prequel. Lets take a second to explore the possibilities of a sequel and prequel. As well as ask the question about whatever happen to the lost Modern God of War story arc?

So it is a Prequel?
If it was a Sequel:
Honestly, I maybe the only fan of the series who feel’s this way but I’m kind of against a God of War Sequel. Why? because I feel like his story is complete. In my opinion, for the creators to try and push it further will only gain us a story that’s forced, and shallow. One thing that remain constant in the GOW series is that the story fell in line with Kratos’s desires. The only thing that fueled him was his shame, regret, rage, and vengeful heart.
Kratos was not a hero at all in fact he killed people just for getting in his way. Not to say he was a villain either since his only purpose was to accomplish his own selfish goals. Remember one thing at the end of God Of War 3 the world was going to hell in a hand basket thanks to Kratos killing the Gods of Olympus. Still he showed a flicker of light by saving the young girl in the story and giving the world he destroyed hope to live on. He accomplish his goal which was “Vengeance” and freedom from his sins, but showed that at the end a hope of redemption. To me for a sequel to work the new theme has to be about just that; “Redemption”. Allowing Kratos to atone for all the carnage he created. Finally, allowing him to be the good man his wife and son suggest he is. Still, I doubt that will happen due to the fact that we, as the player, feed off his blood lust.
Since it is a Prequel:
Since this seems more on the lines of a prequel my only question is: will the story of Kratos happen before he was given the chains of Chaos? or Will Sword and Spear be the tools that Kartos uses to accomplish his goals? I ask this because for the most part we all love playing with the chains. The combinations performed with them were spectacular.
Also, what kind of man will Kratos be? Since if you look at the first GOW story arch it suggests that he was a tyrant before the ash? Since he at the time pledge his allegiance to Aries the former God Of War. Still there is that pocket of time before Aries got to him when he may have been a good man. The relationship between himself and his countrymen can be looked into a bit more. In GOW2 it seems that he cared for the country and men of Sparta even though he had them raiding cities. Better yet here’s the biggest question of all…ARE WE GOING FINALLY SEE KRATOS SMILE? Wow, that would be a sight to see.

Can he have Redemption?
Modern God Of War:
Whatever happen to the possibility of a modern God Of War game? If you remember in GOW1 there was a secret ending that showed Helicopters flying over the bones of the titan Kronos. This trailer suggested the possibility of a new hero in the series. I honestly believe that this story arc should be explored more since it lead to the idea of a unique change of pace to the series. My hope is that they don’t abandon it, since they didn’t abandon the other secret video about Kratos’s Demi-god brother who in GOW 3 was finally revealed as Hercules voiced by the awesome Kevin Sorbo. It would be awesome to see a solider or archaeologist infused with the power of Kratos, and bind with his chains of chaos. Or another lost descendant of Zeus who Kratos must destroy.
Here’s the orignal video to refresh your minds.
Over all upon writing this I was told that the new game was confirmed as a prequel but still felt that my points was still valid since the possibilities of a Sequel still exist as well as a Modern GOW title. Let me make this clear I want a new God Of War, but not if it sacrifices story for a aimless action sequel. Tell me your thought on this subject I’d like to know how you feel about this.
