How to Avoid Having a Game Spoiled
by ZackC on April 11, 2012 at 02:00 PM EDT

Just so we are clear, there is not a single spoiler in this article.

When games come out, some people will not buy the game immediately. Most of the time someone waits to get a game because they do not want to spend the $60 on a game. Even though people do not buy the game on day one, they will still want to be surprised by the twists. For those people, trying to stay away from spoilers is really important. There are several things that a person can do to stay away from spoilers, until they beat the game of choice.  The main thing that will keep the game spoiler free is restraint.

Don’t Advertise

On the internet people like to do the opposite of what you ask. If a person says “don’t tell me about……” they will immediately tell you exactly what you don’t want to know. This would be an example for Facebook.  If you hang out with a group of people who play video games, just simply avoiding the subject will keep the spoilers away.

Don’t look for the spoilers

By going on to forums, you run the risk of accidentally coming across some sort of spoiler. When you go onto Reddit for example,  people will jump around in a conversation. If the conversation starts as a discussion of weapon balance, it could accidentally tell you something about the game that you haven’t come across yet. If you go on to YouTube looking for help on some portion of the game, you could accidentally click on a video that has more information then you want.

Don’t touch anything relating to your game

Even if someone does not mean to spoil some part of a game, it can still be done.  There was recently an article relating to the ending Mass effect 3 on Yahoo, just by saying in the heading that people didn’t like the ending tells you something about the game.   Even though this article may not contain spoilers, simply stating information about the game can spoil it for people. I did not read the article, because I haven’t played ME3, and I don’t want to spoil the game for myself. Oh and by the way, I am not going to be reading the comments because I know you guys will say something about the game, thanks in advance.

Buy the game and play it

The easiest way to avoid spoilers is to just play the game. When there is nothing to spoil, then you don’t have to change what you look at or try and avoid. This however is not a true solution, the other options are real solutions. This one is really if you are completely craving the game, this happened with me when Red Dead Redemption first came out.  This option is truly a last resort.

These are all simply examples of showing restraint. The best way to stay away from spoilers is to keep yourself away from areas that could possibly show you these spoilers that you are trying to stay away from.
