There is an old saying that says, sleeping dogs never lie or maybe it was sleeping dogs never tell. Whatever the saying may be, this holds wonders into the game we are previewing today. Square Enix is set to release in the near future this undercover cop title Sleeping Dogs. We recently got the chance to sit down and get a fresh hands-on with the game, so here is what I thought about the game we played.
Let us start by talking about the environment in sleeping dogs. You play as an undercover agent Wei Shen who has entered into the triad organization to do the usually thing that most undercover agents do, try to bring down the organization. There is an authentic sense of being in a Triad gang environment. The city looks great as you can run through the streets and do a ton of crazy over the top actions. The authentic feel of the game is what really stood out to me in my mind. The game has a real sense of a nitty-gritty undercover world and it is shows as you play. If you have ever watched foreign films like Election or Triad Election you can see where they get a lot of the inspiration for this title and setting.
Many people might find this game familiar to the True Crime series and that is very much a plausible assumption to make. The game was originally True Crime, but had its name changed when Square Enix bought it. That is just a little tidbit I thought I had to throw out there. As we move in the combat of the game, I have to say it will be a bloody, brutal, and just downright brawly experience. The fighting in the game is some of the most interesting and amusing that I have ever seen in a game. The brutality that you can do against certain enemies really shows how far the developers are trying to take this game with its realness and gruesomeness.
If you have ever played Rocksteady’s Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City you will already be familiar with the combat. They say when you imitate something that should be considered the highest form of flattery and in this case, it should be considered a godsend. You can counter all of the moves done by enemies by pressing the Y button or triangle button. This is very similar in the way Batman fights. When you fight enemies with weapons, the best thing that you can do is counter and when you get a weapon it is one of the best things, that you will ever experience.
In most gang movies, there is one idea that always held true. The idea at times is the event where the lines between good and bad are blurred for our protagonist and if this game is going to hold true to that. We can surely expect some events where our main character will have to choose between the police officers that he is working for or the new family that he has joined. Although, we were given a chance to experience this, we can surely expect to see more down the line.
If you are excited for Sleeping Dogs, than you are not the only one. I am also looking very forward to this game, as it gets closer to its release date. One has just been announced yet, and its closer than you may think, August 14th to be exact. We will be sure to give you a review when we get it, but of course you knew that?!
