The Active Play PALA Challenge is a collaborative effort between the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and its member companies and the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (PCFSN). It will strive to harness the excitement surrounding active video games to provide a long-term, sustainable approach in establishing healthy lifestyles by making video game screen time truly “active.” Active gaming is a great way to work towards earning your Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA+), and PALA+ is a great tool to motivate and track activity levels to help you live a healthier lifestyle!

Participate in PALA+
PALA+ is the next phase of PALA (Presidential Active Lifestyle Award), a program of the President’s Challenge, designed to motivate Americans to make physical activity and healthy eating part of their everyday life.

Playing MLB® 12 The Show™ for PlayStation®3 (PS3™) system is the perfect way to start earning your PALA+. Featuring PlayStation®Move support, MLB 12 The Show challenges you to get up off of the couch and actively participate in your video game experience by throwing pitches and taking your swings at the plate.

You can meet the PALA+ physical activity requirements with just 60 minutes of gameplay per day for kids and 30 minutes of gameplay per day for adults, repeated for five days a week for six out of eight weeks.

Rack up your 30-60 minutes of active play time with a full 9-inning game, and round out your experience with a few rounds at the plate in Home Run Derby.

Full 9-Inning Game:

On average, it takes 45-60 minutes to complete a regulation game of MLB 12 The Show. In that time you can expect to:

  • throw between 100-140 pitches
  • swing the bat 80-110 times

Home Run Derby:

The game’s Home Run Derby mode offers you the ability to keep swinging for the fences. Each standard round (10 outs) can take anywhere between 2-8 minutes to complete (depending on how many HR’s you can hit) and can be repeated as many times as you would like.

MLB 12 The Show is designed to promote proper technique when pitching and batting. The more that you pitch and swing the bat with a full range of motion, the better your results will be. Doing so will utilize major muscle groups in your arms, shoulders, back, legs and torso.

The nutrition component requires participants to add a weekly healthy eating goal and build upon those goals throughout the six-week period.

Individuals who achieve the physical activity and healthy eating goals will receive a certificate signed by PCFSN Co-chairs and are able to purchase a certificate signed by the President of the United States!
