Dead Space 3 was rumored and recently announced at this year’s E3 and I have to say how I have missed this title. While at E3, we were treated to a behind the scenes extended look at the demo that was shown during the EA press conference. As we entered the room we were told that no pictures and video footage was to be taken or a necromorph would come after us. All joking aside we got on with the demo presentation. Before I begin, there is one thing that I want everyone to know about me and Dead Space. Even though I am an adult who loves games, this presentation scared the hell out me and excited me all at the same time. Now let’s get on to my impressions shall we?

The presentation that we were shown behind closed doors, was not much more than what was shown to the public during the EA Conference. We got to see the events leading up to the main battles that were highlighted and we also got to see what happens with the drop in and drop out co-op aspect of the game. The game will feature our hero or heroes (depending if you play co-op) journeying across a new  icy necromorphic wasteland. This will have them battling humans, necromorphs, and finding ancient markers that have been the staple of the Dead Space franchise. There will be new and unique weapons available to players for the first time.  A new feature to the game is that weapons will have more a useful function with the alternate fires that they have. It was apparent in the presentation that alternate fires for weapons have changed and it seems that the Plasma Cutter now shoots saws out as alternate fire.

Just when you thought this game could not possibly get any scary than it already was Visceral games has added a new element of surprise to the game. Necropmorphs will now pop out of the snow! Is this an effective scare tactic? The answer to that is, yes it is! The guy that was in the seat next to me that almost jumped out of his seat in fear and he can vouch that for me wherever he is. I really felt that this was new and unique in providing an organic experience that all gamers would like to enjoy. If you have played Dead Space before and remember the enemies that crawl into undead bodies and reanimate them, well you will be pleased to know that they have also made a comeback. This time however, the rules of engagement have changed as they will now use the weapons that are accompanied with the bodies that they have taken over to kill you.

Enemies in this game have also been known for being graphic, and brutal and with Dead Space 3 that is still the case. Another thing that is new to this iteration is the fact that you will now battle human enemies. These are pure extremists and nut-jobs which have to be taken out. How this fits into the story I frankly don’t know as we were not given much details about the story. With new enemies comes new gameplay features and that’s why DS3 is incorporating a cover system to help with the new battles you will encounter in this survival horror title. As many fans of the franchise will know when your character is killed, many times it will happen in brutal fashion. We were shown one of this brutal deaths and I have to say it will leave a churning feeling in your stomach. As you might have noticed when Isaac is devored by the boss that Carver and he fights they end up in the belly of the beast. What you don’t know is that this is the event where they are devored and eaten whole. There bodies are torn apart and its really one of those “OMG! over the top moments that make the Dead Space franchise what it is.

If you think that Dead Space 3 is a title that you will be able to play through by yourself, than I have to say you are only half right. Even though we were shown an upgrade to a snow suit which looks really badass, it was only the tip of this very big iceberg that we were shown. If you haven’t already noticed, a new feature to this game is co-op play with a partner. Although the single player experience will still be a staple in this franchise. We were shown an instance where the story changes when you have a partner and when you don’t a partner. It adjusts itself to be two different games but follow the same path and story that you would expect in single when you play by yourself.

Finally, this E3 behind the scenes look was awesome and it showed us a great look into the future of this great franchise and massive scale to the battles that gamers can expect from the game. I am glad that this game is releasing February 2013. I now have a title to add to my wishlist as a birthday gift. You can be sure that we will keep you informed on Dead Space 3 as we get more information. Until then, enjoy these screens posted after the break!
