The newest single-player adventure, God of War: Ascension, will be available on March 12, 2013. In a PlayStation.Blog post, Game Director Todd Papy spoke about the ambitious multiplayer mode that will be, as he says, “worthy of the title, God of War.”
The new multiplayer-mode will combine the visceral combat and brutal finishing kills from single-player with an intense online 4v4 competitive mode. A global beta will be launched in the near future to test the multiplayer gameplay and will only be available first to PlayStation Plus subscribers; although, other secret inroads may be available. According to Papy, “It’s critical to our team that we receive as much community feedback to tune and prime our multiplayer mode for one of the best experiences possible, come launch this March.”

It’s a mystery how and where players will begin as a Warrior in God of War: Ascension multiplayer. There is a story, and your first decision will be to pledge to one of 4 familiar Gods: Zeus, Hades, Ares, and Poseidon. Each god offers a unique play-style and abilities for battle. As you earn XP, you’ll be level up your Warrior and unlock special magic abilities, new and upgraded armors and weapons, mystical relics and other treasures.
The “attack-style” of the god you align yourself with is crucial to the Warrior’s “path.” “Our Warrior customization and XP system is going to keep you serving your God for centuries to come” says Papy in the blog. “It is your goal to become a true God of War, a Champion of the Gods. When you head into battle with friends and foes, you will have teammates aligned to all of the Gods, not only balancing out the strengths of each team, but creating a mythical and diverse combat war in every match.”
In Favor of the Gods, the signature multiplayer mode, the first team to gain a pre-determined amount of “points” will win. Points can be gained by killing and other methods, such as capturing altars, collecting red orbs from chests, and setting deadly traps for opposing players. There is an array of power-ups to give you an edge in battle, such as Hermes Boots that increase you speed.
Multiplayer is promised to be full of “larger than life” moments, just like the single-player mode. In their first map reveal, the creators revealed the terror of “Polyphemus,” a giant Titan whose only wish is to pummel your Warrior. When your team has collected enough points, the gods will drop the “Spear of Olympus,” which is the only weapon that can kill Polyphemus. The team that gets the spear and kills the Titan may win or turn the tide of the battle.
More details will be released about different levels and gameplay as the March 12, 2013 release date draws nearer.
