It’s Bond day, James Bond day! October 5, 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of James Bond. It’s time to think about what the 50 year old film franchise has done for movies, television, games, and pop culture. Gamer Fit Nation had the opportunity to speak with Barbara Broccoli and Hilary Saltzman, daughters of the original James Bond producers Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman. Their uniqe perspective on the evolution of the James Bond series revealed just how fantastic the minds behind the 50 year old franchise truly were–and still are. From the fictional characters, to the real world individuals who played them on screen, the Bond elements were an enchanting reflection of the times, and continue to embody true class, style, and grit. The entire 50 year journey has been recreated for the world to watch exclusively on Epix, and will air at 8pm ET, in a documentary titled, Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007.
Now that you have your Tivo’s ready to go, let’s get into some inside information from two ladies closest to it all, Barbara Broccoli and Hilary Saltzman.
Barbara Broccoli on the pressure to keep the Jame Bond character fresh and interesting:
There’s a lot of pressure, it’s a challenge. Part of the great thing about Bond is that people feel very invested in him. All we can do is try to make the best film at the time, and we can’t be afraid to make changes. It’s important that we keep it fresh, and my father was very brave about making changes and taking risks.
Hilary Saltzman on what keeps the James Bond character and film at the top of the spy genre:
The character of James Bond was created by Ian Fleming. Ian Fleming created an iconic character, and Cubby [Broccoli] and my father [Harry Saltzman] were able to take that character to the next height. That was continued by Barbra [Broccoli] and Michael Wilson. There’s a formula, there’s something for everybody; the cars, the thrill, the beautiful women, very handsome men, there’s always something to see on screen.
