Early on in the beginning on PS3’s lifecycle fans and gaming enthusiasts were proclaiming that the year of the PS3 hasn’t come. Well six years and many months later the PS3 is still here and kicking strong. It was just announced in a report from Games Industry International last month that the PS3 has finally passed the Xbox in shipped units.Well according to the global hardware totals on VGchartz the Xbox360 has a 1.4m advantage in terms of sales. To any PlayStation brand loyalists the fact the the PS3 is selling well might be great news, but thinking again, the GII report is just shipped units and lacks the data for how many people actually own a PS3 system. There are many variables that we can use to determine if we have indeed seen the year of the PS3. Variables such PSN accounts, sales figures, and more. The only determining factors that I decided to look while acknowledging the others is the games.
Games are the most important factor along with additional services, peripherals, and additional add-ons. Looking early into the PS3 lifecycle, it’s clear to see that the PS3 had an issue with producing great monster hits. Sure, there were a few hits like Heavenly Sword, Folklore, and Resistance: FOM during its launch window. These games however were not the system seller hit titles that gamers were hoping for. Throughout the course of the years we got many games like Metal Gear solid 4, Uncharted Drake’s Fortune and of course Ratchet and Clank. The only problem was although gamers were getting good support it was extremely inconsistent with what they were accustomed to. Fast forwarding towards today you can see everything has done an about face.
When you look at the past years in relation with the PS3 and its lifespan, you can honestly say that the “year of the PS3″ started with award winning Naughty dog studio and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. 2008 was the year that started a landslide of great games. The titles that have come after Uncharted can almost be remembered by every PS3 gamer. Games like infamous 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, and Heavy rain to name a few. PS3 gamers have also great third party titles like Assassins Creed Brotherhood, Battlefield 3, Vanquish, Asura’s Wrath, as well as the emergence of HD Collections such as GOW, Ico, and The prince of Persia. There are so many games, but these are just the few that I can name off the top off the top of my head.
Although everyone wants to say that the year of the PS3 has come, I believe it hasn’t There hasn’t been one specific year that we can say belonged to the PS3. It’s been a time frame that expands a good couple of years. We can also see this with new and upcoming titles like PlayStation All Stars Battle Royal, Puppeteer, and Sly Cooper. There’s also the mere fact that Nintendo and Microsoft have games that will try sway other PS3 gamers. Games like Gears of War, Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, and Forza. These are some of the lesser known and more popular titles, but have a fan base that my sway some people to their consoles.
Lastly, the true year of the PS3 my never really come. What will come however is a period that any gamer no matter in what loyalty your console desires lie you will be able to enjoy. We are now living in the culmination of several years of hard development and for that we are seeing how games are hitting their stride. With an impending announcement on February 20th for the future of PlayStation, maybe Sony believes the year has already come and passed. What do you think? If you disagree with me, by all means go ahead, but please think carefully before you respond and let’s have a friendly discussion.
