Let me be clear before I begin, games are not going to cost $69.99. Sony has said that they are in fact going to be cheaper. However, during an EA investor call EA’s CFO mistakenly said they will be. Well after hearing this, it raised some thoughts in my mind. If games did cost $69.99 would you be willing to go all in next generation? Earlier this month head PlayStation honcho Jack Tretton said games are actually cheaper than PlayStation 3 games. If this is true, then how could EA even mistakenly mention this? Is it to in a way gauge consumers interest or is this EA living up to its reputation.
Whatever the case may be, let’s look at the the rise of game sales from one generation to the next. If we look at last generation, games ranged from $39.99 for some first party games and then certain third party games were priced at $49.99. This generation we saw a rise in the price of games to $59.99 all around. This was because development cost grew. Games now average at least $59.99 in the US while the UK is paying an arm and a leg with games costing them 69.99 euros (not an accurate amount but you get the idea) due to the currency exchange and development cost of this current generation.
Whether or not this will actually happen in the US still remains to be seen. The current lack of information between console manufactures and publishers is scarce. However a company like EA that has received high marks as the worst company in America recently might have no regrets in doing so. Which brings me to the reason for this editorial. If EA or any other Publisher were to do this, how many of you would actually pay the asking price? The way game sales have been as of late, a game that doesn’t sell over a million units is most likely to be seen as a failure. It is a shame really when you look at the state of the industry. Games get price reductions so quickly after launch that they are sold almost for no profit at all. It is sad when you have developers or publishers that make or made great games go bankrupt. We have lost many companies over the past years. Companies like THQ, Hudson, Atari, etc.
Lastly, I think that if EA or any publisher for that matter continues the spiral of infuriating fans on the price. I think it will hurt them in the long run. Some fans are already upset at the fact that EA has additional day one DLC that launches with some of their games. Even though our friends in the UK can relate to this sentiment as they already pay a high price for games. This is something that gamers and consumers should tell companies and bring into the limelight. Now, My question to you all is if any company was to start charging $69.99 for games like Battlefield 4, Call of Duty, Gears of War, Uncharted, and other reputable franchises would you still pay for it? I wouldn’t that’s for sure, but then again maybe I’m in the minority. What are your thoughts?
