The Oculus Rift is paving the way for new virtual reality experimentation. Since the release of the developer’s kit, people all over the world have been captivated by the ways developers have been utilizing the new technology. Now, Sony Online Entertainment seems to be joining the fray. The EverQuest developers have very unofficially confirmed rumors that there will be support for the Oculus Rift in their upcoming MMORPG, EverQuest Next.
During a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) held over the weekend, Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley took questions about the upcoming game. When asked about the Rift, he said, “we will support Oculus Rift in some way shape or form. Probably for no other reason then it’s really damn cool and programmers love that stuff.” That may not be an official press release, but he certainly isn’t shy about their interest in the new technology.
This would make EverQuest Next the first MMORPG to support the Oculus Rift, a big step for the genre that already comes closest to full-immersion gaming. This might worry fans of popular anime Sword Art Online (in which players get stuck in a virtual world), but I’m confident the guys at SOE aren’t maniacal villains. Anyway, spending a couple of years in the EverQuest universe might not be so bad.
What do you think, is virtual reality the future of gaming? Or are you hesitant to strap a screen onto your head? Let us know in the comments.
