Warning: there may be spoilers about certain things that have happened in the Superman universe.
Lately, there has been a rumor going around that a remaster to Superman 64 was in the works. Okay, maybe I’m wrong. But you were probably startled for a second, because we all know how horrible that game was. I actually remember owning the Nintendo 64 title and the frustration that came with it. However, that isn’t why we are here today. We are here today because a rumor has circled around that the team behind Batman: Arkham Origins was developing a new Superman game, a game that many developers said was impossible to create due to Superman’s powers being too far behind the realm of possibility. Another factor was perfecting the physics of flight in the game. Superman is hero who is pretty much invincible; he breaks all realms of reality. If this true, then how can a Superman game be done?
There have been many vocal people as seen in the video above saying that a Superman game can or cannot be created. Gamers and comic fans beg to differ. Many comic fans have said that there are different theories to create a Superman game where he doesn’t break the realm of realism. There are ways that you could take away his powers. Superman derives his powers from the sun. The developers could make a story arc where his powers are not taken away but restricted, where he loses his powers of invulnerability due to his power source. Red sun radiation could do this to our hero.
Villains in superman’s universe are very hard to incorporate in the game space. Lex Luthor is notorious for disliking superman and also tries to find ways to defeat him. There are even times in the comics where he teams up in conjunction with other super-villains and utilizes kryptonite in an effort to destroy Superman. Doomsday is a villain that at one point in time actually kills Superman. He could be the main villain in the gam,e or he could be used as a way to foreshadow a second game. The first you use red sun radiation to restrict and the second kryptonite could be used. There is a way to break Superman down and just make him a man: it just has to be well thought out. The Batman: Arkham series made it clear that superhero games are possible. Although Rocksteady has stated that Superman is “almost the impossible game to make” as referenced in the video below, there are ways if done correctly and planed out correctly that it can be done.
Many developers feel that Superman breaks the game, and they are absolutely right. Superman can fly, has super strength, freezes people, and is damn near invincible. I think it’s safe to say that most people want to play a Superman to have all these powers. I know I do. Most of his powers wouldn’t be hard to create in game as we’ve had games with heroes with one of those powers. Flight would probably be the hardest to create simply because of the interactions that would come with colliding with objects at a physics standpoint, but put in the right hands I feel this power is certainly doable. However, I think we should be given a taste and have it stricken away a la metroidvania style. Let us rebuild Superman to the super level he was at when we started the game.
Lastly, I know some people are going to agree and others aren’t going to like the ideas that I presented here. That’s why I am extending an open arm for anyone here to provide a reasonable and logical idea to a reality-breaking illogical Superhero. I think that the game is possible. 20 developers gave insight. Now, what do you think?
