“Subway Eat Fresh!” We all know the commercial or have at least heard the song in some point in our lifetime. Of course, when you think of Subway, you naturally think of Jared, the man who lost several pounds eating only Subway. This brings me into my topic for today. Motion Gaming and Health.
What do the motion devices do?:
The PlayStation Move is Sony’s entrance into the motion gaming market. It’s a very responsive device that is capable of doing one to one motion. It’s like having an extension of one’s body. The games on the device can provide for a very rigorous workout. This is what lead me into thinking about making this post. I’ve played several PlayStation Move games and have built up a sweat playing me some Sports Champions. I work out very often and it never occurred to me that although I was playing video games I was also working out my health at the same time. The Xbox 360 Kinect is Microsoft’s attempt into the motion gaming market. The Kinect is a wonderful device capable of monitoring all of your movements. The camera truly uses your body as the controller which is great for gaming and health aside. This is great for people that want to do a workout and need some way of recording themselves doing it. There are ways for innovation with this camera in gaming and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Take a look at some of the reviews we have on the site for some Kinect games. The Nintendo Wii is the first motion centered console that was in the industry before the Move and the Kinect. This system has brought on a wave of motion controlled fitness games with its waggle controls. The most important part of the movement it brought is its introduction of the Wii Fit board. Now what if game publishers and developers were to incorporate these devices into even more health oriented games? Here is my hypothesis.
These devices are not only a way of prolonging the longevity of the console makers. It is also a way of showing the consumers that they as developers are caring about the health of gamers. Incorporating more fitness and health games that are done in a fun way, that feel less gimmicky can help to encourage gamers to maintain their health. Let’s be honest, many people have busy lives whether it be children, a wife, or a 9 to 5 job with responsibilities to do after that. I assume that there are many individuals that as a means to escape the pressures that society has imposed on them play video games. They have constructed a regiment in which they allow themselves leisure time for gaming.
It’s not a hidden fact that the excuse many people use for not working out is the lack of time in their life. I’ve been guilty of using it here and there and I think that it is safe to say we have all used it at one time. Think about this: how many times have you said your too busy for something, but still found time to get a quick match of Black Ops or a few matches in on some MVC3. My point is this: when you say you don’t have the time to do a certain thing, you really are lying to yourself.
Here is my theory, what if one hour of your day was spent gaming? Now let’s incorporate a healthy game in that hour. You could burn let’s say gaming, 100 calories as an estimate per day. If you play games every day that is roughly 700 calories a week. If you were to incorporate some sense of what you eat either by keeping a food diary which I would highly recommend than I think that this could be helpful in obtaining the weight you want.

Impact on the Industry:
If publishers were to encourage healthy ways to spark innovation in healthy gaming it is a win win situation for both parties. Developers are creating a game that they love making. Gamers are getting a workout and getting healthy all the while having a good time. To be honest this is something that we have been living with for a long time. At the very top of this section there is a picture of an old nes track and field pad. Those of you that have played this ancient game might be chuckling here and there. Let me ask you this how often did you play this game? Did you ever break a sweat while doing the rigorous track meets in the game? Track and field was a prime example of a game that brought into light Gaming and Health. Your body was the controller and you could get a good workout in if you expanded on the experience.
Who says that working out has to be a chore? There are tons of ways for game developers to incorporate innovation in making gamers use their bodies.
