True Gamer of the Week: Eric Blattberg

I love gaming, and I’m all for leading a healthy, fit lifestyle. The two are thought of as mutually exclusive far too often. Most things are healthy in moderation: that goes for gaming, exercise, food, whatever. Whenever gaming and fitness can be combined, that’s awesome — as long as the game doesn’t suck, that is. Sports Champions is a great example of a game that gets players off the couch and moving, yet still offers a compelling gameplay experience.- Eric Blattberg

March 29, 1991, Eric played his first video game — The Simpsons: The Arcade Game on PC — before he took his first steps. At age nine, he learned to type by playing Diablo II online. Currently a journalism and cinema studies double major at New York University, Eric works part-time as U.S. Editor of PlayStation Universe ( PlayStation Universe, the largest independent PlayStation website, is the absolute best destination for PlayStation fans on the web. Ok, so I’m definitely biased, but I think we have a really talented team and a strong editorial voice. His favorite games include Super Mario World, Diablo II, God of War, Okami, and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Eric has owned PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo. He loves extreme sports like skateboarding, snowboarding, wakeboarding, rock climbing, and cliff jumping, as well as Tae Kwon Do, Yoga, and Ultimate Frisbee.

Eric has a very basic workout (warm up, stretching, three sets pushups/modified crunches/burpee) about three times a week. He did Tae Kwon Do for ten years, but was forced to stop due to injuries, but he found that yoga gets him into that same mindset.  He tries to go as often as he can. He also skateboard just about everywhere in New York City, which is pretty cool.

Health Goals:

It’s really tough with my massive workload, but I want to make it to yoga two to three times a week on a regular basis. Presently, my attendance is a bit sporadic — three times one week, zero the next. It’s a really great workout (plus, there are always loads of cute chicks — another great incentive to go).

Eric gives advice to gamers struggling with weight issues:

Apply a game-like mentality to exercise. Set goals, keep track of your progress, and find a way to reward yourself for getting off the couch and moving. Maybe that means treating yourself to a tasty desert after a workout session, or playing an extra hour of Killzone 3. Of course, the real reward is feeling healthy and looking great, but a little extra incentive never hurts.

Opinion of gaming industry and motion technology:

The gaming industry has definitely become more health-conscious in the last few years after widespread mainstream adoption of motion gaming technology. Though simple ‘fitness games’ seem to appeal to some consumers, I’d really like to see some talented studios tackle engaging, narrative-based games that get players sweating. Think Fight Night: Champion’s story mode, but built from the ground-up with motion control. I’d play that. Though I think there will always be a place for the classic controller, motion technology is an awesome new addition to the gaming experience. Sony actually just sent me a full PlayStation Move setup, and I’ve been hugely enjoying playing through games like Killzone 3 with motion control. It’s amazingly precise! I’ve only used Kinect a couple of times, but I think that has some pretty incredible potential, too (insert plug for Child of Eden).
